Speaking Competitions
   
Oration
A list of topics will be provided an hour prior to the competition. Competitors may choose any topic on the list which they wish. Orations will be judged upon 1) organization and continuity of thought 2) clarity, richness, and precision of language use 3) effect of the oration 4) absence of English 5) syntax. Presentation time: ~3 minutes (under 12 years), ~4 minutes (under 15 years), ~5 minutes (under 18 years), ~7 minutes (open).
 
Story Telling

Story to be told in a traditional style. Presentation time:< 3 minutes (under 12 years), <4 minutes (under 15 years), < 5 minutes (under 18 years), < 10 minutes (open).

Poetry Recitation
Poem to be recited in a traditional style. Presentation time: < 3 minutes (under 12 years), < 4 minutes (under 15 years), < 5 minutes (under 18 years), < 10 minutes (open).
 
Pair Dialogue
A discussion or debate in prose or in poetry between two individuals. The script of the dialogue does not have to be original. Clothing in accordance with the script is permitted. Presentation time: < 3 minutes (under 12 years), < 4 minutes (under 15 years), < 5 minutes (under 18 years), < 10 minutes (open years).
   
 
Poetry (Canadian Competitors Only)
  Original poetic composition of any type. Compositions will be judged primarily upon their command of the language and their emotional and intellectual impact. Additional marks will be given to poetry incorporating aspects of the traditional medium. Poems written in one of the traditional Irish dance rhythms, jig, reel or hornpipe, or other traditional Irish song metre will be very welcome.
   
  Writing Competitions
Prose*1 (Canadian Competitors Only*2)   Any form of original non-poetic composition is eligible. Forms include, but are not limited to: novels, fiction for children, fiction for adult learners, short stories, philosophy, literary criticism, history, rhetoric, drama, and science.
   
Learning Books and Aids*1 (Canadian Competitors Only*2)   Original books designed to assist children or adults in learning the Irish language.
   
  Singing Competitions
 
Sean Nós Singing
Two songs, chosen by the competitor, to be sung in the traditional style: one slow and one fast.
Singing in Irish in a style other than Sean Nós (Individual)
  A single song in Irish to be performed in a style other than sean nós. Competitors will be judged primarily upon their ability to communicate the words and emotions of the song in Irish. Props are not permitted.
Singing in Irish in a style other than Sean Nós (Choir)
  Two songs to be performed by a choir, consisting of five or more members
Lúibíní
Two individuals replying to each other in sung verse. Examples of songs of this type include “Oró Mhíle Grá” and “Im Bim Babaró”. The script need not be original. Competitors will be judged primarily upon their verbal impact rather than their musical virtue. Presentation time: < 3 minutes (under 12 years), < 4 minutes (under 15 years), < 5 minutes (under 18 years), < 7 minutes (open).
 
Music Competitions
Harp
One slow air, and two fast tunes. The fast tunes may be any of: reels, hornpipes, jigs, polkas, mazurkas, or marches. The fast tunes may be strung together. No individual tune is to exceed 3 minutes.
Uilleann Pipes
One slow air, and two fast tunes. The fast tunes may be any of: reels, hornpipes, jigs, polkas, mazurkas, or marches. The fast tunes may be strung together. No individual tune is to exceed 3 minutes.
Céilí Bands
Bands of at least three members. Four tunes total: one waltz, two reels strung together, and a choice of either a hornpipe, jig, polka, mazurka, or march. Competitors will be primarily judged upon the “dancability” of the music (standard, consistent rhythm, and “feel” of the music). No individual tune is to exceed 3 minutes.
 
Dancing Competitions
Sean Nós Dancing
Single dancing in traditional style (Ottawa Valley style is permitted but without clickers on shoes). Props may not be used. Live music will be available for dancers, or they may provide a single accompanist of their own. The bout of dancing will not exceed 4 minutes.
Set Dancing
Team of 8 (with two spares registered). The set to be performed for this year is the Clare Lancers. Three figures of the set must be performed. All teams must perform the first figure of the set. Any two other figures from the set may be chosen. Live music will be available for dancers.
